No need to go to a Command Prompt.

Assuming you have the new version of Vista up and running and the new
version is your root drive now and you changed the old drive to slave
and it is both seen by your BIOS and by Windows under a new drive
letter if you look for it in Windows Explorer, and you're sure there
in nothing on this drive you no longer need or want, you can format it
from within Windows in a few seconds.

Start/Control Panel/Administrative/Computer Management/Disk Management

Now find the drive you want to format BE VERY CAREFUL you pick the
right one! Right click on the drive letter, then format and follow
prompts.

looks to good to be tru and so easy, just one question will the system fall
over not knowing which hard disc to boot to even though the new hard disck
has the new copy of vista and the old disc is set as slave?

Make sure your current Vista system is the 'system and boot' drive in Disk
Management and you should have no problems following Adam's routine.
