Format Errors in Files Transferred

A co-worker who previously worked in Corel Word Perfect has re-saved files in
Microsoft Word. When she tries to send these files to my computer, either by
e-mail or by transfer to a memory stick, the files either will not open at
all or open with errors in the text. Mostly, I've noticed that the
apostrophes change to equal signs, the opening quotation mark to an A and the
closing quotation mark to an @ symbol. In addition there are errors in the
tab sets and margins. Any suggestions as to how to avoid this? We tried
saving as an rtf file but this did not work either.

The symbols you're seeing are fairly easily dealt with. They result from the
use in WordPerfect of the WP Typographic Symbols font (instead of the
built-in Unicode characters) for apostrophes, quotes, dashes, etc. Your best
bet is to use Find and Replace to deal with these.

The rest of the problems may result from a change in printer (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/TextReflow.htm) especially if combined
with direct text formatting, multiple tab characters, etc. If styles are
used properly, including custom tab stops (the default tab stops should be
avoided; see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/SettingTabs.htm), this
effect can be reduced.
