If you want to use the CD as a large floppy disc, you will need a program
such as "In CD" (part of NERO Burning Rom). It will do the formatting for
you. IF you just want to burn files on a CD, XP has a build in CD burner.
Burning files to a CD does not require formattting.
When you say "format" what do you mean? Some people use the word "format"
when they mean that they want to erase a CD-R/W. Other people mean they want
to format the disc so they can drag and drop files to it - in which case you
need packet writing software. XP does not have built in packet writing
software. It uses Standard IS09660/Joliet format. You will find reading
through Alex Nichol's page on Burning CDs in XP to be a definite asset in
understanding how XP burns discs http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/cdr_info.htm

Is there any way to format a CD in Windows XP without
using a third party SW?
Thx
.
you need to insert xp cd start computer and go into bios,
then you need to set all the drives to auto, save and
exit to restart your computer you will then get an option
to format which in effect is an fdisk you will be able to
remove or insert partitions here then clean install
windows xp. thats the best i can remember as it's been a
while since i did it.
good luck
