format a number in a query

I have a number in an access query that when I export to excel it isn't
recognized as a number. I have to then select all the numbers and format in
excell as a number. How do I do this in access? I see a format for each
field in the query but do not know what is the correct way to do this.
Please help.

In my opinion, you should go to the table that the query is based on, go to
design view and change the property of that field there.

Golfinray,

I can't do that. Here is the reason why. It is a name field and in the
query we are counting how many times that name appears. That is the number.
Please help me to change it in the query field.

Open the query in design view, open the properties dialog for the field
in question and set the format there.

In the A2003 Query design grid you can right click anywhere in the field
properties to bring up the context menu, then select properties. This
will open up the properties dialog, where you will find the format
property under the general tab.

Clif,

Thank you for your help. I do see that field of format but just don't know
what to put in the field.

Thank you in advance for your help.
