Form field length

My form field length in the finished doc is only 5
characters.
How do I display the length of the form field exactly the
same size as my assigned maximum length?
Any help is appreciated

Thanks for the advice.
But what if I want to have several lines (in one form
field), have them all underlined and the first line
indented by several characters.
So the field can be completed by hand and by computer.
