form field changes size

I've placed a 'form field' in a Word template form and would like to limit
the size (rows and columns) of the field regardless of user input. However,
once the form is protected, characters and carriage returns can be entered
which increase the size of the field. How to fix?

The usual solution is to insert the form field into a (borderless) table
cell with exact row height and column width.
