A message comes up saying my password has expired. It
requires the old password, and I don't recall ever using
one. I've tried the logical ones I might have used, but
nothing works. The computer is now a paper-weight since
Windows XP won't load.

PLEASE email a response - I'll never figure out how to

Although it took me to a solution site, the solutions did
not work as printed.

However, I freelanced and started up in the "safe" mode,
went to the control panel, "user accounts" and deleted
the password requirement under the user name.

Rebooted, and it worked! Thank goodness Microsoft has
this security fault to get around the password.

It did delete some settings in my email Outlook Express
account which I fixed to be able to log in to download my
email.

What a convoluted mess - I was lucky.

Thanks for pointing me to the flawed directions to find
the way to disable the password requirement.

You must have missed Step 6 in that link, that is the process you used
to get in..
Also, Microsoft did not leave it, you did by not passwording the
default Administrator which you should do if you password anything.
