I set up some passwords a while back. I now have forgotten all users'
passwords as well as the admin password. From reading the help file and
posts to this board, I realize I need to sign into the admin to reset
passwords, etc. IS THERE ANY WAY AT ALL TO MAKE IT SO I CAN CREATE A NEW
DATABASE WITHOUT NEEDING A PASSWORD?????????????? AHHHHHHHHHHH...PLEASE
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks!

Create a new database? Yes. Open an old one secured to that mdw file?
Probably not.

If you made those changes to your default MDW group (which you should not
have!) then simply delete system.mdw. When you start up Access, a new
system.mdw will be created.

I think I'm having the same issues. Can you tell me where I can find the
system.mdw file?

This is only impacting my Microsoft Access. I can get into Excel and
Windows with no issues.
Thanks,

Er, Start : Find ?

Personally I would not /delete/ that file. Just rename it to something
else. Then, if that doesn't work, you can always rename it back, so you
are back to where you started.

I'm not an expert, but I'm curious why no one recommended purchasing third-
party software that allows for retrieval of the user IDs and passwords from a
workgroup file. The software is pretty inexpensive and sure beats losing
alot of work put into development.

Because that would not be appropriate in this newsgroup, given its
topic. Similarly, if there was a newsgroup devoted to security in
SQL*Server, you would not find the regulars posting information about
how to crack SQL*Server security :)
it is disconcerting that workgroup files can be so easily cracked.

It is due to a simple schoolboy howler mistake in how they encrypt the
passwords and SIDs. It would actually be quite easy to fix. But it's
not clear whether the next version of Access (Access 12) will still use
workgroup files, or not.

No. There are several cracking/hacking programs that will retrive lost passwords; use your favority search engine to
locate one.
