forgetfullness

Hello
I have X P home. When I go to, field, rt. clk,
properties, screen saver, power, set my preferances,
they work well.... for awhile... then the comp. seems
to "forget", and does not follow my settings. It may work
for.... 3 weeks ,then it forgets and the monitor and hard
drives don't turn off. So, I reset them, change slightly,
and it works, for awhile... what to do??????
