Forest root domain

Hi All,

Think I know the answer, but would like to make sure. If I
have one AD forest, 2 different trees, (eg. abc.com and
def.net), if abc.com was the first domain created,
therefore being the forest root domain, is there anyway I
can remove it and still use def.net? Is there anyway to
make def.net the forest root?

Thanks.

I have checked a few Microsoft TIDs related to this matter
and I suggest that you read support article #197132,
Windows 2000 Active Directory FSMO Roles. Since only one
server in the forest may perform the listed roles and due
to the fact that these roles may be switched to any other
AD domain controller, it may be possible, then to reassign
FSMO roles to another domain controller, demote the
original domain controller and eliminate the original
forest root domain; however, the FSMO roles must be
assigned to another controller prior to any demotion.

Hope this helped.

You _cannot_ remove the root domain without removing the
forest itself. You would need to remove all domains and
then re-create the forest (installing def.net first as the
new root).

You can however, rename the root domain (if you have
upgraded to w2k3 forest mode).
