Forcing a DC to be a member server

Marty Amaral

My company has just purchased a part of another company,
and we have inherited some of there systems which
includes a system that at one time was a DC on there
Domain. This system also contains programs and data files
that we need so I want to add it to our domain.

The problem is that I can not demote the system because
it conplains about a DNS lookup problem. So I was
wondering if there was a way that I can bring the system
on it's onw and force it to not be a DC, and then add it
my domain.

Hello Marty,

Yes, there is a way to forcefully demote it. You can must have Q332199
hotfix on a Windows 2000 domain controller that is running Service Pack 2
(SP2) or later, or install Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4).

Please take a look at the article below:
332199 Using the DCPROMO /FORCEREMOVAL Command to Force the Demotion of
Active

Thank You.
