Force programs to run only in memory?

Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to force programs to run and
stay in the RAM?

Situation: Sitting in the library reading, but I need access to my
computer dictionary (Clue 6.4 program). But; that is really the only
program I need, and the harddrive makes considerable noise (and uses a
lot of battery) when running.

So:
- Is it possible to force programs into and run from RAM? And turn
harddrive off?
- I have no CD-drive so running a live-cd isn't an option.

Thanks.

Øystein, Norway.

How would the computer run if it is unable to access the operating
system on the hard drive?

Hope this helps.

Install more RAM, this will reduce disk I/O and increase performance.

The program ONLY runs in memory. Perhaps the issue is that the
dictionary software "pages" through the word database. This would be and
issue with the software and the amount of memory your laptop contains.
Check with "Clue 6.4" tech support for further assistance.

Gerry: Of course I have to start-up the computer first, but when the
computer is started I want to load the entire program to ram and then
turn HD off, and only use the program.

Ace: I have 2 GB and the computer only uses 150 mb when started (tuned
winXP)

Bob I: Maybe I could mount a ramdisk and then copy the program to ram,
and then run it from ram?

----------

BUT: When the computer is started (no programs running exept services,
NHC and Avast antivirus), and with harddisk spin-down turned on; the
computer turns the harddrive on/off every other minute..

What I am looking for:
- A program (or just a way/how to do) that "freezes" the rest of the
computer (that is: winxp+programs not accessing harddrive), and
running Clue from the memory (with harddrive turned off).

With 2 GB of memory, that's not likely the issue. Contact the folks at
"Clue" as to how the program works. "RAM-disk" may be the answer but you
would need them to tell you how to make it work with your program.

If you want a dictionary, do you think the entire dictionary plus its
program will fit in 2 GB?
