Given your suggestions, with my XP O/S, as a test, I conducted a search for
a file that was located in C:\Windows\System32\DirectX\Dinput. What I
discovered was that with Look In set to My Computer, the Search did not find
the file, and with Look In set to Local Hard Drives (C:), it did - but, I
had to make certain that Advanced Options was CHECKED.

After closing Search, then reopening it, once again, I have to CHECK the
Advanced Options box. I have no idea why Windows XP will not keep this
setting and am hoping you may know.

Many thanks once again for your insight and support, Gerry.

To have Advanced Options checked by default, run this script. Works for both
Classic and New. For Classic, Alt-O can be used as a toggle.

Set "Search" Advanced Options as Default (Line 151)

Set All Search Options to Active (Line 148)

Change Default Search Options

Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Explorer

Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value), Value Data: (0 = unselected, 1 =
selected).

Modify the following values, setting them to "1" to select the parameter as
a default or "0" as unselected. CaseSensitive, IncludeSubFolders,
SearchHidden, SearchSlowFiles, SearchSystemDirs. Restart or logoff Windows
for the change to take effect.

Now you have "The Expert" offering you advice.

I change my Search from New to Classic but I cannot out how to revert to
New, I cannot find "Change Preferences"! I think there is an error in
Help and Support. I vaguely recollect need to right click when it said
when changing from New to Classic.

Does turning off Indexing have any affect of the ability to find files
or does it merely slow down finding a file?

Thanks for your suggestions, Kelly, and you have a VERY nice website. :o)

Regarding .vbs and .reg, I did as you directed and the Advanced Options box
remains unchecked. I am using the Classic version and Alt-O does work,
however, that requires a two key operation versus simply using my mouse icon
to click on the Advanced Options box. In short, unless I misunderstood your
directions, your fix did nothing to fix my problem.

Do you have any other suggestions that work?

Thanks again!

Brianna
