Footnotes

At the end of the line below which my footnotes appear, there are two
question marks(??) why is this and how do I get rid of them?
 
Display the footnote pane, and click the "Footnote separator" item. Delete
the question marks.

To display the footnote pane: In Word 97-2003, click View | Normal, and then
click View | Footnotes. In Word 2007, click View tab | Draft, and then click
References tab | Show Notes.
