Footnotes in tables

My footnotes are numbered incorrectly.

I don't have Track Changes on.

The footnotes are in tables and I want them to number continuously.

The ones in the first table are numbered 1, 2 and 3. The next one, which is
in another table on the next page, shows as 2.

When I search for Footnote 4, it goes to the one that is numbered as
Footnote 2 in the second table on the next page. How do I get this to show as
Footnote 4?

Are you positive that all the footnotes are "real" footnotes?

If they weren't inserted as "real footnotes" the search wouldn't find them.
They are inserted this way--Insert, Reference, Footnote.

I don't know the answer, then, except that footnotes in tables can be
unpredictable. Since notes to a table should really be at the end of the
table (and often should use a different type of reference mark from text
footnotes), you might want to create manual footnotes for the table (I
usually put them in the last row of the table, with merged cells) instead of
using Word's automatic ones.
