Footnotes in book chapters

I am working on a book manuscript and now have a number of separate chapters,
each of them with footnotes starting with 1, etc. I now want to combine the
chapters into a single manuscript, but when I INSERT succeeding chapters they
pick up the footnote number appropriate to being the next following the
previous chapter. How can I have a single manuscript and mainstain separate
footnote numbering for each chapter. No problem with page number because the
chapters are still unnumbered.

You need section breaks between each chapter. Then go to Insert | Footnote
(or Insert | Reference according to your version) and explore the dialog
*thoroughly* looking for the setting that will let you "restart each
section." (In versions pre-2002, it's hidden under Options).
