Footnote problem with tracking changes

A footnoted document is being edited using tracking changes. The numbers,
after the tracking changes do not fit the numerical order. Ie original 1234;
adjusted 12334. The changes have been accepted but the numbers still remain
unchanged. Is there another solution?

Where you get the second 3, have the footnote options been changed to restart
each page, or restart each section?

Slight change in what the problem.
The footnotes worked properly before tracking changes. Then when tracking
changes were started the footnotes also restarted. The tracking changes were
accepted.

Before tracking changes: 12345

After tracking changes with 3 footnote reference on the page
12134253
Two streams: 12345; 123 interspersed within.

Footnote numbers, like any other numbering in the document, will not be
correct until you have accepted the changes.

It's expected that the numbers will go all screwy while you are tracking
changes, as Word has to remember potentially deleted notes, etc. That's
not a bug or corruption.

But once all the changes are accepted, they should sort themselves out.
Are you sure you accepted *all* changes? Is Track Changes off?

Are you sure an extra 3 isn't a cross-reference you didn't catch before?

Are there any section breaks--columns, next page section breaks,
etc--anywhere in the vicinity?

Did you check the footnote options to make sure restarting isn't on?

You could also try the document corruption fixes on a COPY of the document.
