Footnote numbers are in regular font size, not superscript - why?

When I create a footnote, the footnote appears in regular sized (10 pt) font
instead of superscript. I must then manually change the font size every time
I create a new footnote. It did not use to be this way, and I don't know
what happened to change this. Is there something I can do so that every time
I create a new footnote, the footnote number in the text will appear in
superscript format?

It seems somehow that your Footnote Style was altered. If you have no other
customizations in Word, you may just want to find and rename your normal.dot
file, which should set it back to... normal.

You need to modify the Footnote Reference style. Select a footnote reference
mark (in the document body, not in the footnote). If you're using Word 2000
or above, you can go directly to Format | Style, and that style will be
selected; click Modify... and change the font to Superscript. In Word 2002
or 2003, the Footnote Reference character style will be displayed in the
"Formatting of selected text" box in the Styles and Formatting task pane.
Hover over it, click the arrow, and select Modify..., then change the font
to Superscript.
