Footnote number looks like ordinary number instead of scriptset

When I add a footnote it looks like this.1
It should be in scriptset, in a slightly smaller font.
How do I force Word to make the changes
 
What you mean is "superscript," which is the default formatting for footnote
references. It would appear that your Footnote Reference character style has
become changed. You will need to modify or reset the style. If you're using
Word 2000 or earlier, this is fairly straightforward: Format | Style, choose
Footnote Reference, Modify, Format | Font: Superscript. For Word 2002 and
