Fooling usb port to print to LPT

I am using XP Pro SP2 with all patches. I have an old cobalt program which
does not recognize USB printer port, it only recognizes LPT1. On the network
I can make it print to a network printer by using the NET USE command.
However, we bought a new local USB printer and it will not print to the USB
port. I know I have to fool the program by directing it to the LPT1 Port and
then from there threw the USB port. I have tried NET USE LPT1: (then the USB
port name) but it did not work. Does anyone know how to redirect a print job
to the LPT1 then threw the USB port?
