fonts not changing

I typed a word document, but when I try to change the fonts I get a little
box for each letter, instead of the different font. What did I do wrong?
 
What font did you type in? What do you want to change to? What
versions of Word and Windows? What language is the document set to?
 
You got me thinking. I went back and tested a few different fonts. Whenever
I use 'elegance', the other fonts I try to use don't work. So I'll just
avoid 'elegance'! Thanks so much.
