font resize

Forgive me but I am a clueless newbie. I tried to resize the font in a word
document. The formatting panel and the toolbar show that it's been resized
but the font doesn't display as the new size. Why? Any help would be
appreciated.

Ah, this caught me out too, at first. If you already have some text in your
document, you have to Mark it before changing the font size.

Thanks for that. In truth, I wasn't sure of the correct phrase. My years
of using WordPerfect almost led me to write "block the text" but I knew that
wasn't right. "Select the text" was my next choice, but I thought that was
ambiguous too.

So "highlight the text" is the proper usage, is it?

I would be inclined to say "Select the text" as "Highlighting text" is term
given to applying a background colour using the electronic equivalent of a
highlighter.

Or, to give specific instructions:

Left click with the mouse at the beginning of the text that you wish to do
something with, then move the mouse cursor (the thing that looks like a big
I and moves when you move the mouse) to the end of the text and then hold
down the Shift key and click the Left mouse button.

Just as a final thought: toddblack, if you want resize *all* the text in a
document you can Select the whole lot by pressing the Control and "A" keys
simultaneously.

"Select" is actually the MS-approved term, but we often use "highlight"
(even though it is incorrect and, as Doug points out, applies to something
else entirely) because many users are more familiar with that term.
