My computer has been working fine. Suddenly last night I
could not read most of the writing on my screen and was
receiving unreadable symbols instaed of text. I
reinstalled all my fonts and can now read some of the
messages I receive but not all. The main font displayed on
my screen is different. What has happened and how can I
correct this without completely reintalling windows 2000?

You might not be able to. There are what are called System Fonts. They don't necessarily go by that name and some can be large like 15MB. Also many fonts cannot be "replaced" while the system is running. The fonts are in use. You can always try sfc /purgecache /scannow and see if that helps. But if your fonts are corrupted especially Tahoma and MingLiU then I would just reinstall.

George:
Appreciate your response. I have done more reading and
searching with my programs. After rebooting each time, I
can "repair" the problem by clicking on Fonts in the
Control Panel and reinstalling all fonts. Then I must
click on display in control panel and change the fonts
manually. The problem reoccurs after rebooting. Norton
Systemworks find a windows problem stating that the
program,
C:\ProgramFiles\CommonFiles\Installshield\Professional\RunT
ime\0701\Intel32\DotNetInstaller.exe can not access the
file mscoree.dll. But, Windows 200 Pro does not use
mscoree.dll. Also when I tried to reinstall Quickbooks
Premier 2003, the installation program states it can not
access the Fonts section of the registry.

"mscoree.dll...." It does if you have Microsoft Office XP and higher and\or you have the .NET Frameowrk installed. That is what DotNetInstaller.exe is. It is the install for the Framework.

If you can "install" "all" your fonts that's interesting. I believe if you look in the Microsoft Knowledge base for issues that can occur with Fonts in Windows 2000 you will find some "fixes" or "workarounds" but on the whole these fixes usually require a Microsoft hotfix or a reinstallation of the operating system.

There was an issue with Microsoft Office 2000 and fonts but I don't recall the fix for it other then I think it was a hotfix which you had to call Microsoft for and those are free. Have you tried the sfc command I gave you? Did you try reinstalling your current Service Pack for Windows 2000?

I am having the same problem. Cannot read any of my emails, cannot use most of my programs because the fonts have all been changed to symbols. Can copy fonts from my back up to fonts folder in Control Panel, but everytime I reboot fonts disappear again. Actually, I do not even have to reboot. Fonts seem to disppear overnight.

Did you ever figure out how to fix the problem?
