Font changes when pasting into another doc

GomerFackworth (is this unusual enough?)

I have two docs created originally in Word 2000, and I am using Office 2007.
The docs are in compatibility mode.

When I copy a selection that has two different fonts from one doc to the
other doc, the whole selection changes to the font/style that is in the
selection point. (I have a list of paragraphs, each preceded by some
symbols in a proprietary font, i.e. ï¦ï€ ï‚…ï€ ï£ Your car has ...; ï¦ï€ ï‚‡ï€ ï¥ Try
toothpaste ...; ï¦ï€ ï‚‡ï€ ï¦ This flower is ...; etc. Each paragraph has a line
following with a series of ******** which are center aligned for looks)

In trying to copy a selection from my list to another doc, my selection
point is between the centered line, and a font in a foreign symbol which
is left aligned:

************************(this line BTW is centered in my doc)
ï¦ï€ ï‚…ï€ ï£ Your perspective .......

If I choose the end of the centered line, my whole selection selection
changes to the font of the ****** and the whole paragraph is center aligned
If I choose the beginning of the next line before the ï¦ï€ ï‚…ï£, my whole
selection changes to a meaningless gibberish of symbols.

This never happened before in Word 2000 and makes me want to go back to
Office 2000. Is there a way to just insert exactly what I have copied
without changing anything or is this now impossible? (If so, MS has
succeeded in totally ruining a decent word processing program.)

Also I just can't figure out which planet I've landed on as the help section
of Word 2007 comes up with nothing that relates to what I have typed.
Example: I type "font changes when pasting" and I get:
"Identify which program to use to create an organization chart"
"I see a blank thumbnail when I add clips"
"Add formatting to your document by using the Mini toolbar"
"Remove hidden data and personal information from Office documents"

I have sometimes searched for an hour to get an answer to a question and get
a "Results of top 100" where half are about graphics, and few even relate
to any of the key words I typed. Is there something wrong with my copy of
Office or my computer?

Thanks for your help. R-

Have you tried the Paste Options button? For more on how paste options work,
see http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/styles/HowPasteOptionsWorks.html (but
note that the article wasn't written specifically for Word 2007).

To show the Paste Options buttons in Word 2007: Click the Office button and
then click Word Options. In the Advanced category, select "Show Paste
Options buttons" (found under "Cut, copy, and paste"). Click OK.
