Jas

I had my network running nicely in xp (HOME) but since I
assigned a password to my administrator accounts on both
pcs I can't access some folders on the network. When I
was setting the password xp asked me if I wanted to
protect my personal files & folders etc & I ticked yes -
obviously that was the mistake but my question is how can
I change it back so that the network will fully work
again? I need to be able to access "desktop" on both pcs.
When I look at "sharing & security" in the "desktop"
folder "Make this folder private" is ticked & greyed out
so I can't untick it.
Any help would be fantastic - Thanks guys.

Hi,
Sharing folders can get confusing in XP. You may also
want to check the following:
-Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
-Click Performance and Maintenance, click >
Administrative
Tools, expand Services and Applications, and then
double-click Services.
-Right-click the Server service, and then click Start.
You may find these KB Articles useful. There reference
numbers
are:304040 and 307874,just enter this in the KB search at
www.microsoft.com/support.
Let me know how you get on, Luke.

Thanks Luke, I'd already read those articles but they
didn't help me. I just did what you said to do in
services - I did it on both machines & even restarted
them but it made no difference, any other ideas?
thanks Jas.

Hi Jas,
What type of sharing are you using? To be able to check/uncheck
'make my files private' you need to have simple file sharing selected.
Could you please check the following for me:
1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
2. In My Computer, click Tools, and then click Folder Options.
3. In Folder Options, click the View tab.
4. In the Advanced settings, make sure that the 'Use simple file
sharing (Recommended)' check box is checked.
Let me know if this helps, Luke.
