folders associated with search results

You can group the results by folder or add the folder name field to the view
but outlook doesn't offer an 'open containing folder' option.

After grouping by folder there is no information to say which items are in
which folder.

That's odd. Each folder should have its own group and the found files under
the correct group. Do you see the folder names if you add the folder name
field to the view?

In the field chooser there is no fieldname for folder. Also, the searched
items may be arranged in folder order, but there are no headings, and folders
are not named.

That version definitely includes a Folder name field - it comes up
automatically if you search 'all items'

The steps I followed are as follows:-

1) Selected 'Inbox' folder under 'All Mail Items'.

2) Used 'search all items' to search for all emails from 'Smith'

3) All 'Smith's displayed in a list with no reference to folders.

4) Cannot find any tool, anywhere to identify which folders the 'Smith's
belong to.

Are you able to replicate those steps?

I've just worked out how to do it. There is a field called 'In Folder'. It is
hidden away in a section of the Field Chooser called 'All Note Fields'. After
adding the 'In Folder' field, I now know where all the 'Smith's are.
