I have a 2 month old PC with an Intel Core 2 2.66 running XP Pro SP2. It is
very fast and powerful until I place the cursor on a folder containing photo
images. It will quickly show the full list of image files in the detail mode,
but the little icons before the file names take about a second each to go
from grayed out to a darker color. It seems like it is loking at each and
every image file and doing some pre-processing before it changes the color of
the icon.
Only when all the detail image filename icons are dark, can I change the
mode to thumbnails and expect a reasonably fast conversion from a detail
listing to a thumbnail listing.
If I try to change to thumbnails (200 images in the folder) before all the
icons are darkened, it can take upwards of 2-3 minutes to make the changeover.
If I wait until all the icons have changed over to darker ones, (usually
takes take 2-3 minutes for 200 images) and then I click to change to
thumbnails, it will take another 5-10 seconds to show them all.
On my old system, a 1 Ghz AMD with XP Pro SP2, the same process would take
about 5 seconds for the detail listing and then about another 5 seconds for
the thumbnails.
Something on this machine, most likely a setting or switch someplace in XP,
is really slowing down the detail listing within the image folders.
What should I be looking for to speed up the folder listing process?
