Folders access

If I'm in the wrong forum, please redirect me. I have Vista Home Premium, am
the administrator. In the folders left pane are some files with what appear
to be a shortcut symbol attached. When I try to access or right click them, I
get the message "Access is denied". What are these files and why can't I
access them?

They are relic folders that have new names in Vista, and only redirect paths
for old apps. "Documents and Settings" is now "Users" and so on.

Vista does not let third party programs write to protected areas in the OS
like XP does. Some programs were hard-coded to write to these areas so for
backwards compatibility Vista redirects these programs' output to safer user
spaces. These symbolic links are not folders but redirect output. That's
why you can't use them.

Thanks to both of you. I have to say though, this isn't explained anywhere I
looked in any help sections , but I as I now know the reason I appreciate the
info!

Amazing. I just experienced the same problem. So, how are people like you
and me supposed to even know this? Luckily, you and I know how to find a
Usenet newsgroup and look for an answer there.
