I have a folder on my desktop that will not delete. I get an error message
"Cannot find the specified file." I have tried two software programs,
"Delete FXP files" and GiPo@fileutilities and both failed to delete the
folder. I've tried renaming it, moving it - nothing works! I did some
research about this problem and came across a Microsoft article which asked
that I restart my computer in safe mode, etc. When I looked in XP help
about starting in safe mode, it said "When you see the message Please select
the operating system to start, press F8." I do not have this option when
starting my computer. Windows xp loads immediately, this I've been unable to
figure out how to start in safe mode (at least according to the windows xp
help file instructions.) Anyone know how I can delete this folder? Thanks.

Press the F8 key between the BIOS POST screen and XP actually starting to load.

You can also edit BOOT.INI to add an option for Safe Mode to your startup menu. Go to Control Panel, System, Advanced, Startup and Recovery, Settings. In the System startup section, click the Edit button. For SP2, a typical BOOT.INI file looks like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

To add the Safe Mode Option, make it look like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional - Safe Mode" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /SAFEBOOT

Be careful to ensure that the two lines starting with multi(0) don't wrap.

Hi . Try this restart your computer and when you notice the bios screen
start tapping the F8 key , this will give you the option to load safe mode .

If you are still having problems trying to get into safe mode you can
also try this >>> click start >>> then click Run >>> type msconfig , click
ok >>> then click the BOOT.INI Tab >>> then just add a check mark on
SAFEBOOT >> click apply ,,, then restart your computer and it will take you
there ... Once you are done in safe mode just go back and remove the check
mark follow by clicking apply ... Restart and you should be back to normal
boot

You can try this nice add and remove program
