Folder redirection

R

Rajiv K Khandelwal

Had to set up my SBS 2003 after reformatting. Unfortunately, the D drive was
shared as "Server_D (D)" and folder redirection enabled. Now when the share
name has been corrected to "Server_D", the XP node gives the following error
message when My Documents is being accessed:

The network folder, \\Server\Server_D (D)\Users Shared
Folder\r....\My Documents, that contains My Documents is not available. Try
again later, or contact your system administrator for further assistance.

My Documents with all the data are available on the following folders:
1. Documents & Settings\r.....
2. Profile path

I shall appreciate if some one can guide me as to restore the link to the
proper folder from the Start Menu > My Documents.

Thanking you in anticipation.

From scratch? Was this your only AD controller?

That's bad. Don't share the root. I generally use

d:\data
d:\data\users <USERS>
d:\data\shared <SHARED$>
d:\data\profiles <PROFILES$>

......etc.
and folder redirection enabled.

How exactly did you do this reformat/restore? u

Thanks Lanwench for your response.

1. Yes, this is my only AD controller.
2. Appreciate your concern on the root issue and shall remember it for
correction.
3. After formatting the server, allowed the users to work and their
folders were automatically redirected from their XP nodes to the server
folder. Later when the mistake in the nomenclature of the shared folder was
realised, it was corrected and the new path was mentioned in the redirection
wizard.

Ouch. You just created an entirely new Active Directory domain. What
happened that made you do this? What else isn't working - I'd expect a
lot....

Did you then touch all the workstations - disjoin them from the old domain
manually, then use /connectcomputer to join them anew?
2. Appreciate your concern on the root issue and shall remember it

Do you use offline files? (I don't, for LAN-connected computers....I don't
see the point)

You ought to be able to disable folder redirection and then re-enable it to
the location of your choice using GPMC to edit the policy directly, but I
would be very careful to back up the mydocs files somewhere else first, for
safekeeping.

Thanks Lanwench for your response.

You are perfectly right in mentioning that I had to disjoin them from the
old domain manually and then join them anew. I am not aware of any other
method.

The reason for using folder redirection is that a few of my staff change the
seats and then it becomes difficult to track and backup their document
files.

Have an additional DC, and life is a lot easier. OR make sure you have
really good backups of your whole server. :)

Totally agree....I use folder redirection & roaming profiles.

Can you forward me to some link where I can learn how to restore from an AD
backup?

How will another Domain Controller help and work? Your guidance shall be
appreciated.
