Folder Redirection 20 second delay

Hi,

I would like to ask for your help on the following...

We are running Windows XP (SP1) workstations on a network with a
Windows 2003 Server.
We have assigned a group policy object to enable Folder Redirection on
our workstations for My Documents, Application Data and the Desktop.

I've tried installing SP2 to test it out and have noticed a delay in
the logon time. After enabling various logging options I narrowed it
down to folder redirection and specifically My Documents redirection.

Here are a couple of excerpts from FDeploy.log:=======================

10:24:18:342 Contents of redirected folder My Documents will be copied
to the new location.
10:24:18:372 Redirecting folder My Pictures to
\\025ABC\Home1\Arch\%USERNAME%\My Documents\My Pictures.
10:24:18:382 Folder My Pictures already redirected to
\\025ABC\Home1\Arch\temf\My Documents\My Pictures.
10:24:38:459 Previous contents of folder My Documents at C:\Documents
and Settings\temf\My Documents will be deleted.
10:24:38:459 Successfully redirected folder My Documents.
The folder was redirected from <C:\Documents and Settings\temf\My
Documents> to <\\025ABC\Home1\Arch\temf\My Documents>

10:27:11:975 Successfully obtained redirection data for Desktop,
(Flags: 0x9).
10:27:11:985 The user was found to be a member of the group
s-1-5-21-2570627339-595396017-2782738742-184154. The corresponding path
was \\025ABC\Home1\Arch\%USERNAME%\Application Data.
10:27:11:985 Successfully obtained redirection data for Application
Data, (Flags: 0x9).
10:27:11:985 Successfully gathered folder redirection settings for
policy 025-Settings_FolderRedirection.
10:27:11:985 Redirecting folder Desktop to
\\025ABC\Home1\Arch\%USERNAME%\Desktop.
10:27:12:005 Folder Desktop already redirected to
\\025ABC\Home1\Arch\temf\Desktop.
10:27:32:025 Redirecting folder My Documents to
\\025ABC\Home1\Arch\%USERNAME%\My Documents.
10:27:32:035 Disabling permission for user redirection of My Documents.
10:27:32:035 Folder My Documents already redirected to
\\025ABC\Home1\Arch\temf\My Documents.
10:27:32:065 Redirecting folder My Pictures to
\\025ABC\Home1\Arch\%USERNAME%\My Documents\My Pictures.

===================================================================

As you can see there is a consistent 20 second delay. Regardless of
what machine I use (tried it on a couple of Dell Optiplex's of various
speeds and an HP VL420 but the delay is constant 20 seconds) which
leads me to believe that it is due to a timeout of some sort. The only
timeout I can think of that is at 20 seconds is the application
termination timeout which I changed to 10 seconds but still the delay
remained at 20 seconds.
I tried disabling the Windows SP2 Firewall but that changed nothing.

Has anybody encountered this or if you have any ideas or suggestions
that I could try your help/contribution is much appreciated.

Hi,

The problem with XP is that redirected folders are always made
available offline so ALL the My Documents gets copied to the Offline
Files folder on logon which can cause delays and may be what is
causing your problem.

Go to the Default Domain Group Policy and ENABLE the Do not
automatically make redirected folders available offline.

It is located under User Config - Admin- Network -Offline - Last one
on bottom.

Cheers,

Hi Lara,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I tried that setting, although I've already disabled offline caching on
the workstations themselves. It still is 20 seconds. I've tried this on
'clean' accounts so there weren't any files to be cached and it still
took the same time (mind you, Application Data and Desktop don't have
this problem).. only My Documents?! Whats so special about it?

I also just tried redirecting My Documents to the home folder (just as
an extra check) because supposedly that skips the ownership and rights
check (which I thought for some reason might not be working right and
causing this timing out), but still there was that same delay.

Can anyone confirm that they have SP2 and Folder Redirection working
without this 20 second delay? Just to rule out SP2 being the cause.
Even though it only occurs after I install SP2, but maybe some other
setting is just now 'expressed' under the SP2s reign.

Hi,

That is definitely weird. I haven’t put SP2 on my work machines yet
because it has caused problems of at home with making my machine quite
slow.

The only other thing I can think of is to make sure DNS is working
correctly. Often that affects GPO’s and can cause slow logins etc.
Check my website to make sure it is applying properly.
http://www.sd61.bc.ca/windows2000

The weird thing is that according to the item listed in your log, it
looks like it is still trying to copy the files to the offline folder
of the local workstation "10:24:18:342 Contents of redirected folder
My Documents will be copied to the new location"

Cheers,

Lara
