Folder Options missing

DC Gringo

We have a WinXP Pro machine that is missing the "Folder Options" item under
Tools menu. Other machines show this option from Windows Explorer, folder
view, and Control Panel. I have seen some complex registry procedures to
enable this option, but there has to be a more user-friendly way. Anyone?

There are two registry keys that handle this

Click START, click RUN, type REGEDIT (case insensitive) & click OK

Navigate to both of these keys below, by clicking the '+' until you get to
EXPLORER then you click on that ket itself. If its not there thern create it
under the POLICIES key

User Key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explore
r

System Key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explor
er

Create a key: 'NoFolderOptions' of type 'DWORD'

Set the value to: '0 = show' or '1 = hide' (set to 0 (zero))

I hope this helps,

Newbie,

Thank you for the guidance. I've actually gotten this before, but I am
trying to provide direction to someone halfway around the world. There's
got to be some less technical instructions or settings somewhere. Any
ideas?

Hello Again

I have created a registry file which I have zipped & attached to this post.
If you use Outlook Express as your newsreader you will see it as an
attachment. If not copy the following into a new text document (From Windows
Registry Editor to the last zero on the final DWORD):

-------------------------------------

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explor
er]
"NoFolderOptions"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explo
rer]
"NoFolderOptions"=dword:0000000

-----------------------------------------

Copy that to the new text doc (MS Notepad file)

Click File menu SAVEAS & in the filename surround the name in double quotes
(see below):

Filename: "Reg Key.reg"

In the save file dialog box make sure ALL FILES is selected

Click SAVE (button) & your registry key will be created like the one
attached to this message

Zip that file, e-mail to the person, get them to extract the reg file

Get them to double-click the file - say YES (OK) to do you want to enter
this information into the registry?

The ask them to click OK to the message box that shows when you have
successfully entered the infor into the registry.

I hope this helps,

Here's a reg file that does it; you merely download the file and merge
it, usually with a double-click.

Line 129. Restore Folder Options Under Tools

I strongly recommend accepting unsolicited files from anyone on the net.
Use the link to the edit on Kelly's site that Elmo gave.

1. Click Start - Run - type GPEDIT.MSC and press Enter key.
2. Expand To:
User Configuration
Administrative Templates
Windows Explorer
3. In the right-side pane, double-click the entry Remove the Folder Options
menu item from the Tools menu. Set the value to "Not Configured".

May require Log Off and Log in again.

If don't want to do it manually then you can also try this VB Script. See if
it helps.

If you look at the registry key I created & the registry key on that Kelly
site they are identical, except I created my one myself & you recommend
using a third party site to download the same thing.

If you see in my original reply I created the key attached, in words too &
explained to the OP how to create the registry file hiself

Maybe its my 27 years programming experience, supporting Windows since 31.
to Vista, being a Microsoft Beta tester & having a A++, CISCO, MCSD, MCSE,
MCP & BSc compared to your post a few usless links & making silly comments.
You are pretty hopeless for a so-called MVP. Sorry, but it had to be said.

I feel the easiest way to this solution is to create the key I suggested
yourself & send that file to them. All they have to do is double-click, then
one last click. It couldn't be more simplier.

I myself help people from around the world on a daily basis so I understand
what its like when you have someone 8000 miles away with a laptop, which
they cannot use & 4000 viruses on the machine... It takes time, but is worth
it & will continue to do it regularly because I love to help & I enjoy
helping people.

I'm sorry, but I cannot suggest anything any easier than I have already
explained. maybe you can install PC Anywhere, PC Duo etc, remote onto their
machine & do it for them.

You think running 3rd part VBS' is a good idea when someone may not
understand scripting like me & maybe you? This approach is not recommended
for non scripters

I have been fighting viruses as a huge interest for over 10 years & have
seen so, so, so many VBS script viruses. What if the person has a very old
version of the scripting engine? The script won't run. You have to think
about all these kinds of scenerios when helping someone so far away.

What if this person doesn't have admin rights to get into the Group Edit
msc? Plus the original OP said he is helping someone from 1/2 way around the
world who many not understand computers. Although a very good suggestion all
you are doing is creating the same registry keys by doing that then what has
originally been posted. For me, unzipping, a double-click & then another
single click to import a registry entry is easier than going through your
way.

That should have been, NOT accepting files from someone as was offered to
you.

I don't care who you are or what experience you claim to have. You actually
sound more like a 13 y/o with no experience what so ever. As you have
demonstrated in several posts, you really don't know what you are talking
about.

It is not a good idea to take a file from anyone on the net as you offered.
Get them from reputable sources. You're not what one would classify as a
reputable source.

I didn't mean to disparage 13 y/o olds. A better way to phrase might be on
the lines of there seems to be a lack of maturity.

Are you an administrator?

Could you have protection software running that is blocking access?
Spybot, Adaware and other software has options to prevent registry changes.

Could you have malware? Some malware will write its own copy of
regedit. Type this into the Run box:

regedit.exe (Press Enter or click OK)

This will help if a virus created a file regedit.com (which is also an
executable.)
