Folder Opens on Startup

A folder located in C:\program files\Microsoft open every time I boot the
system. I have gone to msconfig - startup programs and this folder is not
listed. I had the same problem with an ATI folder however it was listed and I
unchecked it in start up and it no longer appears.
I checked and the folder does exist in C:\programs.
Any ideas?

Wayne,
If it's NOT in the 'startup' folder (either C:\Documents and
Settings \<USER>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup or: C:\Documents and Settings
\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup), as Leonard Grey suggests, then go
to 'Folder Options' in 'Control Panel' and choose the 'View' tab and find
the item named "Restore previous folder windows at logon" and 'uncheck' it.
That should sort it out.

The folder does not exist in Run, Msconfig, Startup.
Using Windows Exploer I can see the folder at C:\Program Files\Microsoft.
There are two sub folders Office Live and Search Enhancement Pack.
I went into 'Folder Options' in 'Control Panel' and chose the 'View' tab and
found
the item named "Restore previous folder windows at logon" . It was
'unchecked'.
The folder was not in either C:\Documents and Settings \<USER>\Start
Menu\Programs\Startup or: C:\Documents and Settings \All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Startup).

Then I have no answers.
I too, will be looking with interest at this thread because there are two
Win2000 computers I have to manage at work and they do a similar thing.
They open the system32 folder (in both cases), but have never found a reason
why. Windows has got this thing (controlled by that 'check box' I was
talking about) which allows any open explorer windows at the time you shut
down the computer to be re-opened on startup. I thought it might have been
this in your case (if it was not configured as a start-up item) but seems it
is not. If it isn't configured as a startup item (see: msconfig > startup
tab) and the "Restore previous folder windows at logon" check box is NOT
checked in 'Folder Options' > 'Control Panel' then I am truly stumped. -
Sorry.

Thanks for your help. I've contacted MS Support and when/if I have an answer
I'l post it.

To everyone who is experiencing the folder pop-up when system is started or
re-started, the fix is simple... Simply delete the Microsoft folder that
contains the folder Search Enhancement Pack... When you restart your system,
the window will no longer appear! I had the same issue and I uninstalled the
new Live Messenger, the problem went away. When I reinstalled the new Live
Messenger, I only installed the Messenger feature and did not selet the
optional features. When I restarted the system, this window appeared on
startup. So I simply deleted the folder as stated above, problem solved...

What is this "Search Enhancement Pack" folder you are talking about?

I recently had this same problem. I went to start, run, entered msconfig,
selected startup tab. De-activated the following: hpwuschd2, dumprep 0 –k,
wkssb, mxoaldr, pcmservice. None of these apps are critical and are not
needed at startup. Not sure which one did the job but I no longer have the
problem of a page opening at startup which has the folder: search
enhancement pack. My best guess would be that "dumprep 0 –k" was the culprit.

Arguably not needed at startup, but I suspect hp... is what occasionally
reminds you to clean your printer. Now we all "know" such utilities are
there to make you use more ink than necessary, but if you were _never_
reminded, you might forget for too long and it would dry and clog ...

I experienced the same problem after installing the Microsoft Search
Enchancement Pack.

I was able to resolve the issue, using the instructions below:

START > RUN > Type regedit

Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Right click MSSE in the Name list and select modify. Notice that the MSSE
entry is the only one that has a space in the path that doesn't have quotes
around the path, So, the path is seen as

C:\Program Files\Microsoft rather than...

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Essentials\msseces.exe -hide

But if you edit that line so it has quotes around the 'PATH' only, so it
should read

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Essentials\msseces.exe" -hide

IMPORTANT. Notice the '-hide' is NOT within quotes.

Thought I'd found the answer here, but that registry key, C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Security Essentials\msseces.exe, isn't in my registry. Did a
search for it an it aint there? I'll have to keep looking for an answer to
microsoft's increasingly intrusive behaviour. I'm getting sick of it.
I know it's head in the sand stuff but if I uninstall this "live" thingey I
won't miss it as I didn't have it before, and I'll claw back 120 odd Mb of
space!
I think it best if eveyone went Linux or similar, we might then get back to
having fun with a computer :)

I am having the same problem...I've tried deleting the folder, but am unable
to do so. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled windows live and that hasn't
worked either.
