folder maxes

Can anyone tell me how many subfolders a folder can
contain in windows 2000? And if the subfolders also
contain folders, if that effects the highest level
folder's maximum amount?

I'm asking because the company that I administer is an
insurance company and they want to have seperate folders
on the server for each different policy number. Right now
they have about 10 thousand policies and they get more by
the day. Can the windows File System support thousands of
folders under a drive letter, or do I need to set up
folder ranges like

1-1000 1000-2000 2000-3000

those would be folder names, with seperate folders in
those as the policy numbers.

damn this is a confusing question.

so basically, again my question is, is there a limit to
how many folders can be on a partition in windows 2000?

if anyone can understand me, any help would be much
appreciated.

thanks
Jeff

Hi, Jeff.

Drew addressed the performance aspect of your question.

As to the "how many subfolders" question, the answer is that it depends on
the FILE system (FAT32 vs. NTFS), rather than on the OPERATING system (Win9x
vs. Win2K). Since a folder is treated by the file system as "just another
file", the only practical limit on the number of folders is the size of your
HD. More specifically, the size of the partitions and logical drives you
create, since the limit is per volume and you can have multiple volumes on a
single HD.

For the official word, see these pages from the online versions of the Win2K
and WinXP Resource Kits:
