Folder for Logon/Startup scripts

For a Windows XP Pro workgroup computer, which is the proper folder for
storing Startup scripts?

Some articles say "C:\Windows\System32\Repl\Imports\Scripts" and some say
"C:\Windows\System32\GroupPolicy\Machine\Scripts\Startup".

Which is right? Does it matter?

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\

The ones you refer to only exist on servers.

The default location for local users is
Systemroot\System32\Repl\Imports\Scripts.

Ooops! Forgot the "percents":

%Systemroot%\System32\Repl\Imports\Scripts

John,

make that Import, rather than Imports.

Thanks for the correction! I was looking at that on a Windows 2000
standalone workstation and the GPO seems to take the scripts from the
%windir%\System32\GroupPolicy\Machine\Scripts\Startup directory, yet the
help files say that it is in the ...\Repl\Import\Scripts folder.

I know XP and W2K to be nearly identical with these things. I stuck
phony scripts in the
%windir%\System32\GroupPolicy\Machine\Scripts\Startup directory and they
were displayed in the GPO tool but at a quick glance I couldn't readilly
see where it would be changed to the other folder. So I am thinking
that my answer may be incorrect but I'm not sure?

John,

I guess it doesn't matter much. On my computers the logon script
is in %Systemroot%\System32\Repl\Import\Scripts, but the
installation has been upgraded since Windows 3.0 (if not 2.1
:), so I can't be sure whether they should be in the other
folder in newer installations.

It is possible that the only thing that matters is that the
scripts are in the NETLOGON share, because they may always be
started from there, but I cannot verify that.
