folder customizations transferred from win98se to winxp

I had windows 98 second edition for about 3 years. I
discovered that I could customize any folder I wanted. I
ended up with about 15 folders with picture backgrounds.
When I upgraded to windows xp, the folder customizations
remained, 15 folders with backgrounds. However, now I am
unable to edit these folders to remove these backgrounds.
How can I edit these folders so that they no longer
display the background customizations?
