how can i change the colour of one folder (say yellow to red) very easy on apple mac wish i still had my g4

This functionality (if you'd like to call it that) is not built in to
Windows 2000. There are third party products that will do this that you can
find in Google (or search engine of choice) search.

Well you can do it but it takes a little work. For one you have to get the folder icon. That is in shell32.dll. You can use Reshack (look in Google for it) to get the folder out. Pick the 32x32 plain yellow one (no gradient). Now you have to get an icon file editor such as Microangelo. Their's is shareware. You want a 32x32 icon file. You can color it red with that.

Now you will need to make a file called desktop .ini. If you look in My Pictures open desktop.ini with notepad you'll get an idea of what is neccessary for just the icon change. You will need to have Show all hidden files and folders enabled to see desktop.ini there. Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder options... | View | in the list box below uncheck or check as the case may be to insure nothing is hidden.

So in desktop.ini it you want this

[.ShellClassInfo]
InfoTip=My Red folder
IconFile=MyBitmapOfARedFolder.bmp

Of course you put the bitmap in the same folder as desktop.ini.

Finally you go to the folder in command prompt and type:

attrib +s +r +h desktop.ini

Then close out of the application you have with the folder open likely Windows Explorer and reopen it to that folder. Should be red. If it isin't right click the folder and choose Properties | check Read-only | apply only to the folder itself not subfolders and files | Apply | OK.

Now you have a red folder.

heck... like the OP said... it's easier on a mac!

You can use your own icon to substitute for a folder icon using the
free Activicons utility - http://www.cursorarts.com/ca_ai.html

Go to its "Directories" screen to select a folder, then click "hange
Icon"to use your own icon.

- return address is altered slightly to reduce spam.

Yeah and I messed it up. The bmp should be ico.
