Folder Bar in Outlook 2003?

In Outlook 2002 (XP), if you clicked on the currently open folder's name,
the bar that the folder name was on would turn into a drop-down list of
folders. You could then click on any folder in that list and Outlook would
open up that folder and automatically close the drop-down list. The Folder
List was also available, which remained open until you closed it. In Outlook
Express, the bar I am referring to is called the folder bar. I am not sure
what it was called in Outlook 2002.

In Outlook 2003, we now have the Navigation Pane, which also contains the
Folder List. However, there seems to be no way to open a list of folders,
choose one and have the list automatically close. The Navigation Pane
remains open until you close it. Correct?

In the book, "Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Inside Out", on page 83, it
states the following:

"Click the Folder List button in the Navigation Pane to display the folder
list. In the list, click the folder you want to open. Outlook hides the
folder list again after you select the folder."

Is that really supposed to work like that? My Folder List remains open until
I choose to close it. I just want to know if Outlook is malfunctioning or if
the book is wrong and Outlook is functioning correctly.

Outlook 2003 is really nice but I really liked the ability to change folders
as easily as I used to in Outlook 2002 without having to open & close a
separate pane every time I want to change folders.

Thanks in advance for any help here.

It doesn't auto-hide anymore. Who is the author of the book? Jim Boyce?
Perhaps you'd also contact him about.

You can now only toggle the Navigation Pane by using ALT+F1 or customize
your Toolbar to include the button for it so you can easily toggle it.

Yes, it's Jim Boyce. I will contact him.

O.K., thanks, Roady. That's what I was afraid of. The folder bar was SO much
more convenient!
