Folder actions glitch

Suddenly, folders and drives manifested the following
problems: (1) They opened in search mode. Search is the
bolded option when you right click. (2) Each new view
opens in a new window. The only way I could defeat the
first problem was to create an "open" option in the tools
section and define it to use Exlorer. But the no change in
preferences has any effect on the second issue. I've
selected the correct option, no help. The check box for
open in same window is greyed out on the file type page.
