fn key functions

Hi,
My fn key function seems to have stopped working!
When I try holding down the fn key and the brightness left or right, nothing
happens and also the volume fn function does not work.
I also note that the green volume 'blocks' that were present on the screen
seem also to have gone. I can only increase and decrease the volume from the
toolbar or control panel now, but cannot adjust the brightness!
Any ideas as to what may have occured? Have I 'disabled' the fn key by
mistake?

You seem to be missing the proprietary software for your laptop that makes
these keys and the onscreen display function, contact tech support for your
laptop for assistance.
