fly with laptop in check-in baggage

I will travel by air with a laptop computer, and for some reason
intend to put it inside the check-in baggage. The airlines doesn't
care about it, but says it is not responsible for any problem.

I know the check-in bag will experience freezing temperature in the
baggage cabin underneath. The flight time will be more than 10
hours. I like to know whether or not there is risk for the computer
to be damaged by the freeze.

Thanks for your information and expertise on the matter.

The most likely item to get damaged is the battery - next is
probably the display. I suggest you check the manufacturers
specifications, which normally include operating ambient
temperatures, and non-operating (but not harmful) temperatures.

The other suggestion is that you shut the machine down and remove
the battery. This guarantees it is in non-operating condition.
Take the battery with you, thus protecting it. This (battery
removed) should be the way you got it.

None of this protects you against theft.

On modern jet aircraft the cargo holds are heated.  Airlines
carry all kinds of temperature sensitive cargo.  Also, don't
take the battery out of the laptop.  Li-ion batteries might
not be permitted on board if they are not attached to the
equipment.  A spare battery may be allowed with the laptop,
but if you carry the battery on board and the laptop is
checked, it will most likely be confiscated at security.

My sincere thanks to all of you for the information and kindness.

Best regards,

No - you cant rely on cargo holds are heated - i know as i work
for an airline. Normaly there is 1 cargohold that CAN be heated in
case sensitive cargo is loaded such as live animals, but u cant
rely on that the bag will be loaded in that compartment, nor that
the heat are turned on.
