My floppy drive shows up in the system as drive 'A', and
device manager says that the device is working properly.
I can find no conflicts in the system. The problem is
that when I insert a disk and try to copy files to it I
get a message that there is no disk in the drive.

Also, when I put a disk containing data into the drive I
get a message stating that the drive is not formatted. If
I try to format I get an error saying that the drive
cannot be formatted.

Does anyone know what could be causing this and what is
the remedy?

If these are disks that have been previously formatted by or written to
in a non-WinXP machine, see http://tinyurl.com/li4a

If they are old formatted floppies it may be that one of the descriptor
bytes is not set which XP requires. Try using a brand new floppy and see if
that works.
