Could be you have a defective floppy drive in that its changed media
signal isn't working. It's possible the ribbon cable got damaged or
there is a bent header pin onto which the ribbon cable connectors were
slide onto but most likely the floppy drive doesn't work. Unless the
drive sends a changed media signal, the rest of the hardware (and OS)
won't know there was a change.

Could be the floppy is bad. Sometimes they stick; they warp due to
heat, get pinched under books, or otherwise physically damaged. Slide
the shutter a couple times and notice if it snaps shut freely. Press
your fingers against the metal hub and rotate the floppy disc inside the
shell, or shake it vigorously enough to rattle the disc and hub around.
Then try using it again. Have you tried using a head cleaning diskette
(with a solution to make sure it actually cleans)?

Yoda,

I had the same problem with an Asus Motherboard. I ended up changing the
drive. I think the media had changed that XP could not read the drive. I
would first do what "Vanguard" said. try the cleaner without the solution
if no go, then change the drive

But the floppy may not be drive "A" to XP - you can change drive letters
with reckless abandon.

Ok first let me thank everyone for replying
the problem has now been sorted
and i am kicking myself as we speak
<Blushes>
i had put the cable in the wrong way round at the back of the Floppy drive
this was only found out after i upgraded my bios, reinstalled floppy lots of
swearing and abuse, then suddenly i remembered that the cable would fit
either way round when i installed it.DOH
I need spanking with big sticks
let the abuse begin.........

LOL

Thanks for letting us know. And don't worry about the spanking - I doubt
there's anyone who hasn't attached a cable backwards to a floppy at
*least* once. ;-)

I thought the LED on the floppy stayed on constantly if the ribbon cable
got reversed. You never mentioned this symptom.

to be honest i didn't notice it because i am disabled and the computer is
low down, so i only get to it when someone can get it onto a desk for me.
well i guess i have learned a new lesson
Cheers
