Floppy Fix

JAX

Hello Yves,

I had floppy problems ever since going to XP. I tried every suggestion I
could come by and even switched FD's 3 or 4 times. Nothing worked until I
installed the 3 mode driver that is offered on that link.

After installing that driver, I have successfully used floppies between a 98
machine, 2K machine and my XP machine, as well as my Sony camera.

Many posters have said they have had no problems at all with floppies. Many
say they have had the same problems I did. I have to wonder if there is not
a problem with the native drivers on some XP CD's and not others. Do you
have any thoughts on that?

MS had published a Hotfix that removed my floppy from Windows XP. After
check on the web, I found a web site stating how to try to fix this. It was
suggested to un-install the patch I just installed. My floppy came back.
Months later, I installed the Roll Up 1 patch. This included the "bad"
patch but my floppy is still working.

MS is supposed to rectify the floppy problems with SP 2.

Hey Yves,

It seems that the 3 mode driver is working, we'll see. This seems to be a fix
for now instead of waiting for SP2.

The floppy 3 mode support is for Japanese floppy drives.
I have always disabled this in the BIOS because I have a
floppy drive just like the rest of the world.
The Japanese floppy drives can read 1.44, 1.2 and .720
floppies. Hence the name 3 mode.

Thanks Frank,. I think you missed part of the story. The 3 mode driver is
what got my system working. There were a few more posts to this effect on
other NG's today.

True your system is working. However I cannot believe
that this is an XP problem. Everything that I have read
about it points to it being an OEM hardware problem.

Hi Frank,

I have no "OEM hardware". There is no hardware conflict in my system. The 3
mode driver cured my floppy problem, as it has done for others. If you read
one of Yves's posts in this thread, you will see that he has found
information that SP2 is supposed to address a known problem with floppies. I
read somewhere in the KB that the problem was there but, they offered no fix
at that time.

The 3 mode driver works for me and, I will recommend trying it to anyone who
is having problems with floppies. If it doesn't work, all they will have to
do is un-install it and go back to the native driver.

I have come to the conclusion that, some XP CD's have defective floppy
drivers and some don't. With near identical hardware configurations as mine,
I have communicated with people who had no problem with floppies from their
first install. of XP. That wasn't my experience.

The problem is not just with XP as the same problem existed with Windows
2000. In my case changing to a different make of floppy drive cable
fixed the problem. I don't think that the various XP CDs available have
any affect on the problem.

Hi Michael,

I don't recall if I mentioned in this thread or not but, I changed FD's 3 or
4 times, including new cables, nothing worked until I installed the 3 mode
driver. I feel that I ruled out any hardware problem, as well as any other
software problem, except the floppy driver. As I said, I no longer have a
problem with floppies! Read the whole thread, especially my posts, to see
where I am going with this issue.

I did read the whole thread and saw where the fix worked for you. I was
just pointing out that the problem did not start with Windows XP's
drivers. In your case different drivers worked for you and might work
with Windows 2000 for those with the same problem. In my case different
cables solved the problem. I have often wondered if the drivers that
come with Windows 2000 and XP might have problems with being too strict
with hardware and only perfect hardware will work with them. The
different drivers you used might not be as strict and will work with
"lesser" hardware.

I doubt that inferior hardware was my problem. All items in my machine,
although not necessarily the state of the art, are top brand. The FD I have
now is Sony, I used the cables that came with the retail box, not the tray
issue, the same with the other FD's I've tried. The Sony drive did not work
until I installed the 3 mode driver. What more proof should I need.

My recommendation to try the 3 mode driver is just that, a recommendation.
It works for me, it may work for others. If it don't work, no harm done,
just remove the driver and go back to the native driver. Do you have
anything to suggest to those with floppy problems that hasn't been suggested
in these newsgroups already?
