Floppy Drive write protection

We have been plagued by some floppy disk issues. We insert
a floppy into the drive and try to access and get the
error message:
This disk is write protected. Remove write protection or
insert another disk.

The disks are not write protected and don't contain
viruses. This happens randomly with disks that worked only
moments before. Anyone have any ideas?
 
Have you tried a different floppy disk drive? The write-protect
sensor might be faulty!
