Floppy drive wants to format valid diskettes

I occasionally need to move small files from a non-networked computer to my XP Pro machine and I find that my floppy drive occasionally responds with " Disk in Drive A: is not formatted. Do you wish to format it now?" it's been an erratic problem until now, where it's become permanent. I changed my floppy drive to a used LS-120 Super Disk, hoping it was my drive, and when I tried to test the new drive, I got the same thing. Now I can't tell if the new drive is any good or not. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...thanks

Hii,

Try run regedit

Start/run, and type regedi
look fo
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E980-E32511CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
Delete the UpperFilters (and LowerFilters if any)
Restart PC and check again

Hope it helps

Pete

Thanks for your help, Peter. I should have just replaced
it in the first place.. :)

Hi,

Have you try to use a known good disk to test the drive?
Or is the symptom only happened on the same floppy disk?

I have the same symptom on one of my floppy and I could
not read the disk by using another PC.
The FAT file format is corrupted on that disk. I can re-
use the disk after formatted it again.
If it happened to all floppy disks, the drive read/write
head may be dirty or worn out or the circuit board on the
drive is become fautly. Buy a new floppy drive if it is
the case. I prefer Panasonic, less than $10.-
You may also try to use a floppy head cleaning kit to
clean the head, around $3 to 4.
Or use a cotton stick with dileted alcohol and then
clean the head. You must be very careful as it may band
the head and cause permanent damage.
