Hello,
I have real all of gorups opinions and still have that,

Sometimes, at start-up process, Windows XP checks my Toshiba Satellite
notebook's floppy drive, and look is if sometimes is in it or not.

I have tried these,

1-In Services, Shell Hardware Detection service is set to "AUTOMATIC"
2-No Anti-virus software is installed, just McAfee Firewall for
start-up (and it has no setting about devices including Floppy)
3-I'm running on WinXP Pro + SP2
4-I've contacted Microsoft but not newer suggestions.

Please help...

Thank you.

Hi,

I hope that I have understod it right.
your notebook while startup checks the floppy drive becuase in the BIOS
startup the floppy drive has been assigned to be checked before the
harddisk. therefore you have to change the BIOS startup sequence to let
it start first by harddisk then floppy drive.

regards,
Mas

My notebook is old, so there's no option in BIOS about Floppy
configuration, yes it checks floppy for a possible floppy-boot
sequence, but during "Welcome screen" of Windows, the Floppy is
accessed again SOMETIMES.

Day by day it occurs and in the same day, it doesn't happen.

Is there a periodly checking performed by Windows for Floppy?

Please help, coz i've eliminated all of 4 possibilities in my previous
message.

Thnx.

Default at boot is floppy first then hard drive. A major cause for your
"symptoms" (second floppy check) - if prior to shut down you copied files to
a floppy disk or the last disk function involved using the floppy drive.
This was prevalent in the "older" units - sister action today is the
computer booting into the last file or folder opened at shutdown.

Nope, i didn't use floppy before shutdown, I mean it becomes sometimes.

For example at opening screen (Welcome), floppy checked by Windows
TODAY, but at the same day it doesn't happen again, but after 1-2 days
it happens again.

Confused :S

Are there exact services about floppy in administrative tools (control
panel)
I only heard Shell Hardware Detection and it's Auto.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

maybe your anti virus is automatically checking your floppy. in any case go
into control panel, system, hardware and disable the floppy....... if you
find that you need to use a floppy, go back and enable the device. sort of
like a light switch..

ps: since your laptop is old, it may be that the floppy is simply giving
out..... they were not built to last......

Hello again,
I have tried everything including disabling start-up elements, services
and setting Hardware services to automatic but nothing helped.

Situation is exaclty that:

SOME DAYS, Windows XP checks my Toshiba Satellite's S1800-100 floppy at
"Welcome" screen (not during Boot sequence).

Today i discovered new thing, my laptop is too old and it has ACPI
event id: 4 error in "event viewer" in "Administrative Tools" which can
be seen through "control panel"

So my BIOS is too old and no NEWER BIOS released by Toshiba. PLUS to
THAT, i saw Floppy disk controller in "device manager" is running
through ACPI interface (you can see by clicking -> device manager ->
standard floppy disk controller -> properties -> details -> ACPI /
PNP0700...,

so could that floppy access be because of that ACPI message?

Thank you.

the floppy is simply bad, if your laptop is "old". the unfunctional floppy
is probably creating havoc for windows. It is unusual that you cannot
access the bios/cmos and disable the floppy. The bios/cmos starts at the
power up stage of the laptop. Sometimes you have to press the del key or an
f1 while the machine boots in order to access the cmos. But until you
disable it, windows will cause you problems. Try again to disable in cmos and
windows device manager. Possibly physically removing the floppy may help,
but your old laptop may not function without a floppy drive, functional or
not. Consider that the old laptop may not be of value to you, since there
have been many advances in the electonics age, and you are basically driving
a "model T"..........

Hi databaseben,
Yes i disabled and OK for now, but i don't beleive it's because of a
possibility of physically defective floppy, anyway it wasn't used a
lot. Now, i beleive it's because of ACPI event id;: 4-5 message at
"event viewer" and no newer bios released by Toshiba.

Because, despite all of system settings and hardwares are the SAME,
SOME DAYS it happens and you can see a lot of report in Google Groups
like me if you search.

Thanks.
