Floppy drive activation

After I installed WD I notice my floppy drive activates on it's own. It does
not matter wether I am running a scan or not in the program at all. Sometimes
I have to put a disk in it to shut it up. This never happened before I
installed Defender so before I uninstall has anyone ever seen this? thanx

Hi zippy;

I haven't heard that one for a while... since about 08/2006. Are you sure
your Defender is the latest version?

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1593.0

Engine Version: 1.1.3007.0

Definition Version: 1.23.4050.0

The fix back then was either to slip a blank floppy in the drive or else
disabling it in the BIOS, if it's rarely used.

Hey Dave;
thanx for your input. This is a recent ( 2 week) old install from the
windows site- so ? I will go back and check everything. My fear is this
program may allow access to info from my floppy as we still have old stuff we
use on these disks. Is there a patch or do I have to live with this? thanx
for your time

I don't blame you for your concern. There was never a patch for this
problem, although it seemed to be resolved (at least the complaints dropped
off) along with later releases of Defender and it wasn't so much an access
but a spin up to see if anything was on the floppy that should be checked
no matter if the disk was inserted there or not, so what I'd do in this
situation is to try a repair install from Control Panel > Add / Remove
Programs > Windows Defender > Click here for support information > Repair.
Please let us know how you fare after doing a repair install, and if it
resolves the issue, it shouldn't hurt. I suppose it could also be specific
to the hardware or drivers you're using... anything unusual that your
aware of?

Mr Cat, a regular on these forums had that same problem... let's see if he
responds, and if it still exists on his system.

Mr Dave; Just an FYI. I tried repair fro A&R but it told me the repair file
did not exist. So I did not get the whole package for some reason. I then did
an install & un install, three times. This program left so much debri, I was
deleting files for hours preperation H time. Anyway - on try #4 the most
recent version took, 11-19-07, ran a quick scan and update with no problems
yet. We will see, the God's in Redmond need to be more thorough when they
write this stuff. iT CAN BE WORSE THAN A DOG WITH WORMS! later thanx

Glad it worked in the end. As with Dave, I don't remember seeing/hearing
about this issue for a long time--over a year at least. It was present at
some point in the beta, and got fixed. So--I don't know what went on with
your install, but I'm glad it went away.

Hello zippi,

Suggest you try CCleaner –(Free) to be sure no traces from old
installations are left.

<http://www.ccleaner.com>

Note, uncheck Yahoos tool bar during install.

If Windows Defender is utilized go to Applications, under Utilities uncheck
"Windows Defender".

Tip: Mr.G recommend using the default checked boxes and running Advanced
maybe once a month or so

It is fine to have things ticked in SYSTEM, but it would not be advisable to
tick anything in Advanced unless you are sure what you are doing.

CCleaner Beginner's Guide
http://www.internetrotsyourbrain.com/ccleanerbeginnersguide/

On the left side, click on the Contentes menu for more information.

NOTE - The first time you run CCleaner

's Issues scanner you'll have to keep running it back-to-back until it finds
nothing.

One scenario is a registry key may only be a reference pointing to a
completely different location in the registry and when it's removed then that
reference link is also noticed as being invalid on a subsequent scan.

It's generally a good idea to keep running the Issues scan until nothing is
listed.

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut.

PS. As always, you should make sure that you have got a working system
restore
point before you run any test, download or install a new game, application,
or software update, you make changes to your computer.

Gentlemen; From past experience I am leary of many third party
apps/programs, fixes Perhaps my own fault but I have had registry meltdowns
before while useing these CC Cleaners and registry mechanics-to name a few.
As with games or anything else - if I have to go in and do surgery on
something taht should work on it's own, then I dont need it. Like windows
updates- some are good and some are fatal. Much of this stuff does more harm
than good, your forever chaseing bits of leftover crap and you have to
install more dubious crap to clean out the original crap. Crap being the
operative word here. So as I cannot get WD to stop scannig an empty drive(
without playing "operation") I will drive a stake through ot's heart. Thank
you for all your help

I agree with you. Never ever use any of the so called "Registry Cleaners"
because they never help your system in any shape or form. In fact, if you
get any advice from some one calling himself/herself as Engle then you know
it is likely to damage your system!. He is an idiot who has nothing better
to do. He has already posted some 7,000 useless messages!

I am surprised that these "Registry Cleaners" (or should I say Registry
Damagers) are allowed to be advertised on Microsoft Newsgroups. It is time
to ban them completely because they don't belong here.

PLEASE DON'T USE CC CLEANER OR WHATEVER IT IS CALLED IN ITS NEW INCARNATION!
If it is so good why are they giving out free of charge? Have they got some
sinister motive?

Thank's J; I uninstalled Defender and went to all the spots it could have
hidden files( i think, but maybe not). I deleted everything but the drive
still gets accessed, now it is only for a very brief time. However it never
did this before WD plus this seems to have been a problem in earlier
incarnations of this program. No one seems to have a fix for this and trying
to get any info from MS is futile. I dont want to have my drive chewed up, I
had to put it in special as we have a good deal of stuff saved on 3.5 any
ideas? thanx again

Hi sippy,

FYI

Jack Ass is our pet troller.

The Jack Ass Syndrome is a term used when a person has certain limitations
in mental functioning and in skills such as communicating, taking care of him
or herself, and social skills.

These limitations will cause a poster to learn and develop more slowly than
a typical poster.

Jack Ass may take longer to learn to speak, walk, and take care of their
personal needs such as dressing or eating.

They are likely to have trouble learning in school, and posting to Microsoft
newsgroups. They will learn, but it will take them longer.

There may be some things they cannot learn. They keep trying.

now -that's- funny
Jack Ass couldn't pour water out of a boot if the instructions were on the
heel...

Sippy, Be yourself a judge, please read any post here or any NG here in
Windows Defender

http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...&pt=&catlist=&dglist=&ptlist=&exp=&sloc=en-us

Jack Ass is no capable to help in this Ngs, to the max, he can refer you to
others NGs
if his mother or baby siter do the typing of the address.

Sippy, is you are using the web browser reader, at the top of this page
there's a box that says Search For: and another that says In:

Type or paste Jack Ass in the Search For: box, and pick any NG in the drop
down menu from Windows Defender on the other box.

Well Sippy, enjoy and have fun.
