Floppy Disk drive

I have another computer but the floppy disk drive isn't
working. The light is on all the time but nothing happens
when i put a disk in. When i have tried to scandisk i get
the message "cannot check disk drive there is no disk or
it is not formatted, or a disk utillity has locked it
insert another disk and try again". Does this mean my
floppy drive is now dead or can it be fixed. I am runnig
windows 98.
