floppy disk drive

Using xp prof and I try changing the fdd with 'Sony' FDD/new cable. Strange
it may sound. It works ok when I first test it example, save a 'word' file in
it and open a file from it

When I put it back into its shelf and closed the casing, it wont work,
meaning when I try to save a document, it will ask me to insert a diskette
(even though its the same diskette or different diskette).

Take it out of the casing and it wont work also. The connections are seated
correctly and tight. The pc can detect the FDD (the FDD was tested ok at the
shop and this 'sony' was the 2nd FDD, The first fdd (different brand) also
showed similar symptons). All these changes takes place when the Power is
'off'.

(interesting thing is if I switch the cable ends around, it only work once,
that is I will be able to save/open a file, then when it wont work anymore).

Any idea what is wrong with the pc? Any idea how can I resolve this, TIA

See how many FDD's show in Device Manager. Uninstall all FDD from DevMan,
even if only one shows. Reboot. Windows should find "new hardware" after
reboot.

If I translated your query correctly, it seems that you have added a
second
FDD. If this is true, you must go into the BIOS and enable the second
FDD. drive A should be on the end, drive B should be after the split in
the cable, the solid end should connect to the FDD controller on the
mainboard.

It is never a good idea to open Office files from floppy disks.
Save to the hard drive and open from there.

In the DM, there is only 1 item for floppy and after uninstalling it, and
reboot, the situation remains the same. (also try to uninstall in safe mode)
There is only 1 fdd and connected at the end of the connector.Strange as it
may seems, I just tried, it can read the floppy and when I take the floppy
out and put back again, it cannot read, even without moving the pc (thinking
that there may be pin connection problem). I tried changing the diskette
(different brand) and also did not solve the problem.

Just dont know what else I can try except to exhange the fdd and the shop
will jump// any ideas please ......TIA

Is this a new pc?
Is the floppy disk new?
used?
formatted with xp?

Try using a Dos floppy boot disk.
Try booting several times.
Drive in case
Drive out of case
Leave floppy in and start, shutdown, restart.
Take floppy out, put back in, start, restart.

Its a compaq presario and not new. Both fdd and cable are new and tested at
the shop. When it says not formatted, we format it on the said pc which is xp.

When I click on 'A' drive and if it takes too long for any message such as
'insert diskette' etc or the 'hour glass' to change, I try to close it, it
will then give a message that the prog "my computer" is not responding. Does
this give you a clue as to what is wrong with it. Help ...........TIA

I don't know if it is driver problem or something else.
Does a floppy boot disk work?

no, it does not work. At the most I can get open the floppy twice safe/copy
etc and that about all. If you take out the fdd and insert back without
shaking anything, it will not read again........"please insert disk'

Put the floppy before the hdd.
Try to boot using a floppy boot disk.
See if the drive keeps working to let you can boot several times.
